2018 MHA Research Heater Tests

Test MHA-1818
February 9, 2018

Heat exchanger reconfigured from downdrafting parallel channels
to a serial channel.

Experimental stacking according to ASTM E2780 "high burn rate"
In ASTM testing, the load is intended to be ignited from a hot coal bed.
In this modification, pieces on the top row are split in half, and ignited with kindling placed on top

Red oak, log cabin stacking, 234 stacking. Top ignition
60.5 lbs including 2.0 lbs kindling
20.3% moisture. 234 stacking.

Pieces are numbered from the bottom up,  front-to-back and left-to-right

Fuel load including kindling on top.

Pisla HTT 602 door, 22" wide
Austrian eco firebox, see  http://www.heatkit.com/research/lopez-2014-03-01.html

Condar spreadsheet summary panel, calculated at 90 minutes.

Testo Raw Data

Lab Notes

Flue gas graph to 90 minutes.
Note: CO curve is inaccurate due to failing sensor. Backup CO data has been used for calculations.

Red line is stack temperature and green line is room temperature.

Red oak, same fuel batch as last series of 2017

Burn sequence.
Time lapse taken at 2 minute intervals, fixed focus and fixed exposure.
Notice the burn progression. Once the initial surface flaming on the large lower pieces is over and a char layer has formed, the fire burns very slowly. The second row is still intact after the 90 minute standard test length.
