Arrival at Philomena's in Dublin. From left: Rose, Anna, Harry, Peggy, Teresa, Philomena, Nellie, Leila.

6 sisters.

Bridie and Leila.

Fireplace in Bridie's sitting room.

Apple tree in Bridie's back yard on Clonturk Park (Dumcondra)

Hydrangeas in Bridie's back garden where Leila played as a child.

Temple Bar district in Dublin.

Temple Bar district.

St. Patrick's park.

Ragus, who were playing at the Olympia.

The Liffey

Upstairs at Besham's Fish and Chips - the best in town.

En route to Croke Park with Brian. It is just around the corner from his house, and he got tickets for the
all Ireland hurling semi-final.

About 60,000 people showed up.

Clare (yellow and blue) was playing Wexford (white and blue). We were cheering for Clare, who won.
Brian's cottage is in County Clare, on the West Coast.

Clare superstar Brian Lohan in the red helmet. Considered to be one of the best hurlers of all time.
Hurling is an amateur sport - Lohan is a bank executive by day.

A broken hand. It is a pretty brutal sport where men whack each other with sticks. Very fast and
exciting, also.

Heading for the pub after the game.

10 lbs less gut and I might have a chance.

Muhammad Ali was at Croke Park in '72.

Sand sculpture at Dublin Castle.

The theatre at Trinity College. Trinity is where the Book of Kells is kept. It was the
seat of European civilization during the Dark Ages.

Walking down Drumcondra Road towards downtown, around the corner from Brian's house, and about
5 minutes from Bridie's house.

Brian's house on Hollybank Road.

Entrance to the basement apartment, where we stayed.

Leila and Nellie check out the living room.

Kitchen. Brian built the cupboards.

Heading out of Dublin towards the West Coast. We didn't get very far the first night -
about an hour out of town. O'Loughlin's hotel in Portlaoise.

We called Brian on his mobile en route and he met us at the town square in Lisdoonvarna

Well known for its local mineral water spas.

Brian's cottage, about a 2 minute drive from town, or a 20 minute walk.

There's a map of Clare on the wall. Brian cut it from a piece of the local stone.

Cliffs of Moher, about a 5 minute drive

Walking on the beach at Liscannor Bay in Lahinch, about 5 miles down the coast. There were surfers out in the water.

Ennistymon, another little town nearby.

It doesn't take too much space to open a pub around here.

Hydrangeas in Lisdoonvarna. Walking into town for a "full Irish breakfast" and to check email.

Lisdoonvarna. The town square is on the left. This is one of the best areas in Ireland for live traditional
music. At least a dozen pubs have live music every night. There used to be a huge folk festival here
annually until it got out of hand in the '80's. There is a traditional annual "matchmakers' festival" in
September that draws big crowds.

We left Brian's and headed for David & Brenda's in Sligo. We drove through the Burren, one of our
favorite parts of Ireland. It is a limestone plain with unique flora and fauna, and ancient Celtic monuments.

Scroll right for a 360 panorama view of the church interior.

David & Brenda's house in Sligo.

The kitchen.

They added a sunspace.

The giant's head is in the background, part of a local mountain range.

Giant's head in the morning. This countryside inspired Yeats.

Another view, later in the day.

Wild heather.

Milo the wonder dog. He has Phd. in ball recovery.

David, Leon, Brenda, Leila

Sligo is the home of William Butler Yeats. Population is around 20,000

The Niland Gallery. We checked out a few of the shows. Brenda is a painter and knows
the local art scene pretty well. David is involved in theatre production, acting, and teaching.

The Guiness "Gig Rig". The band was pretty hot.

Stopping in for a Guiness at David & Brenda's favourite watering hole and meeting place.

We left for Belfast, where we had to catch our flight home. We went to the little town of Templepatrick
near the airport to get a pizza. Note King Billy on his white horse.

Hilton Templepatrick.

Air Transat plane getting loaded at Belfast airport.
